About Us

ASF was created as a result of a settlement with Longview Power that set up a mitigation fund to correct the damage to the environment caused by the mining and burning of coal.  To date, ASF has awarded more than 1.3 million dollars in funds to promote our mission.

Our Vision

Our vision is for environmental values to lead our energy future – clean streams, clear skies and a stable climate, with the least amount of energy necessary to provide the goods and services we need. ASF seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to protect freshwater streams and tributaries against the effects of pollution from energy development and use.

To accomplish this vision, ASF will fund innovative projects that mitigate the impacts of energy development and use in Appalachia by:

  • reducing greenhouse gases,
  • restoring streams and fisheries,
  • promoting public awareness, and
  • creating innovative carbon-reduction research and projects, including programs directed at the reduction, offset, sequestration, mitigation and storage of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases.

ASF offers grants to organizations and individuals to support initiatives that:

  • reduce energy usage and greenhouse gases, and promote lower or no greenhouse gas emissions from new and existing energy development facilities;
  • create innovative carbon-reduction solutions, including initiatives directed at the reduction, offset, sequestration, mitigation and storage of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases;
  • contribute to the restoration of streams and fisheries harmed by energy production and use, from mining and drilling for coal and gas, to the acid rain caused by power plant emissions; and
  • raise public awareness and inspire personal action, educating individuals across Appalachia that energy efficiency and conservation not only save us money, but help protect our air and water for the long-term.
